Poll: 72 percent approve of Covid relief law – POLITICO

Interviews for the new poll, which was conducted March 12-15, began the day after Biden signed the bill into law. The results should not be compared with previous POLITICO/Morning Consult poll questions about the bill, since those questions described its contents. The new survey asked voters whether they supported or opposed “the $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package that President Biden signed into law.”

The Biden administration is touting the new law, sending the president and other officials on the road as part of its “Help Is Here” tour. Meanwhile, as Republicans run headlong into popular support for the law, GOP leaders hope that highlighting other spending included as part of the measure and the partisan vote to enact it will decrease its support among the electorate ahead of the next election.

In follow-up questions, majorities also expressed support for two of the law’s most prominent provisions: the stimulus checks that some Americans have already received, and the extension of unemployment insurance benefits.

“The broad-based, bipartisan support for stimulus checks is evidence of the broad awareness that many Americans need a lifeline right now,” said John Leer, economist for Morning Consult. “It’s no surprise the extension of unemployment benefits is also extremely popular: Americans acknowledge unemployed workers deserve additional financial support until job growth resumes.”

A little less than two months into his nascent presidency, Biden remains popular, notching a 62 percent approval rating in the new poll. Only about a third of voters, 34 percent, disapprove of the job Biden is doing as president.

The POLITICO/Morning Consult poll surveyed 1,993 registered voters and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
